Vineyards:
Thorn Hill’s Big Magic is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah that are all grown in the volcanic soils of Lake County’s Red Hills where the Thorn Hill’s wine ranch is located.

Vintage 2017
After several years of drought, the winter of 2017 brought substantial rainfall to the North Coast Wine region including Lake County and Napa Valley. Cool, early spring weather provided a long, steady flowering period, which in turn resulted in an optimal “berry set”—when each tiny flower turns into a young grape. Moderate summer temperatures ensured slow, even ripening, and harvest delivered small clusters with intense varietal flavor and an ideal balance of sugars and acidity.

Winemaking
After carefully harvesting the grapes by hand they were gently transported in half ton bins to the winery where they were de-stemmed and sorted before being cold soaked for five days and then fermented to fully extract color, flavor and tannin from the skins. Once fermentation completed, Amy Thorn transferred the new wine to carefully selected sustainably sourced 100% French oak barrels where the three varietals aged separately for 18 months before being blended prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes:

Enjoy enticing aromas of cherry, plum and mocha flavors that linger on a luscious finish.  Big Magic is a wonderfully deep, concentrated red blend. Intense dark cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant flavors are joined in the very long, succulent finish by spice, sweet oak and mineral tones. Buoyed by big, but very supple tannins, this luscious red wine is immensely appealing now, but it will develop even greater allure with further aging.
