Details

Chalone AVA consists of only 300-planted acres in Monterey County. It is known for a rare combination of limestone and granite soils that sit at high elevation of 1800 feet. This god given site offers unique Pinot Noir incomparable to any other. We source two clones, Mount Eden and 114, from Brosseau Vineyard, who grows all grapes organically. This Pinot Noir embodies the characteristics of this exceptional terroir that are full of intensity, minerality, and complexity.

Winemaking

After 5 days of cold soak, whole berries are fermented in both an open top fermenter and new barrels. It is aged in 100% French oak with 50% new for 16 months and bottled without any fining and filtration.

Vintage

2020 was a very challenging vintage. From the bud break to veraison, the vines experienced the ideal growing condition under the benign mild weather. But serious fires started in the end of August and continued in September throughout many grape-growing areas in California. As a result, so many grapes were smoke tainted. However, there were several areas, where the vines were fortune enough to avoid the damages from the fire. These vines produced very high quality grapes that turned out to be incredibly elegant wines with intensity and balance.

Tasting Notes:

This Pinot Noir showcases the pure aromas of raspberry, pomegranate, dark cherry, and lavender as well as the elegant bouquets of cedar, white pepper, and anise. The entry is smooth and a layer of intense red berries seamlessly intertwined with vibrant acidity. Fine, concentrated tannins highlight the minerality and complexity on the palate. Distinctive and intrigued.
